Day fire's effect

Charred remains of trees lean in deep ash, marking hills that hadn't seen fire in 100 years like headstones in a cemetery. When the rains come, water will sprint past the blackened trunks undeterred by grass, plants and brush.

Some of the mountains that surround Ventura County are still green and covered with healthy pines. But enough were consumed by the 254-square-mile Day fire — fifth largest in California's history — that flood control officials worry about winter rains swooping down slopes and stealing logs and boulders.

BRENDEL HIGHTOWER: Shelby Township/Macomb County

APPEAL: Shelby Township is one of the fastest-growing communities in Macomb County as measured by new home construction. This is rapidly changing many areas, especially the northern and eastern sections of the township, from a mostly rural to a suburban landscape.

According to Shelby Township's master plan, 5,300 new single-family homes were added between 1990 and 2002. And according to Housing Consultants in Clarkston, nearly 4,000 residential building permits have been issued since 2000.

Sewer lines are being constructed along major streets, helping to add to the growth of this attractive community that offers a variety of subdivisions, some with man-made lakes and water fountains. The northern and eastern sections have larger lots and larger houses. Almost 100% of the township has city water, and about 55% has city sewers, township Supervisor Ralph Maccarone says.

Trailer fire forces family from home Mobile home called total loss ...

SHALERSVILLE A township family was forced to relocate Saturday following an early morning fire at their Infirmary Road residence.

According to the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department, a call was received at 8:15 a.m. Saturday for a report of a fully involved structure fire at 9329 Infirmary Road, Lot D8.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a single wide trailer engulfed in flames. All of the occupants of the home had already evacuated the building safely, according to fire crews.

The Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department was assisted in extinguishing the blaze by an engine and manpower from the Streetsboro Fire Department. The Garrettsville-Freedom-Nelson Joint Fire District also had been called but were canceled while en route to the scene.

Seven firefighters remained on the scene until it was cleared 10:45 a.m.

Leighton just waiting

CONSTRUCTION firm Leighton Holdings Ltd is taking a wait-and-see approach to any possible bid for infrastructure and engineering group Downer EDI Ltd.

"The company (Downer EDI) is very fortunate to have a large balance sheet and surplus cash and we’re always looking at opportunities," Leighton’s chief executive Wal King said.

"We do have a small shareholding in that company and we’ll see how events unfold in the future."

Mr King added that many of the opportunities currently available are "highly priced".

"We continue to say that unless the opportunities make strategic and commercial sense we’re not interested in pursuing it for some obscure reason," he said.

After intense market speculation leading to a sharp rise in its shareprice, Downer EDI this week issued a statement to the market saying it had received no takeover approaches.
