Dear Ms. Builder: I am going to have a major remodeling job done at my home. This is my first major project, so I need to find a competent remodeling contractor. How do I evaluate various contractors? -- Jean W. Dear Jean: Everyone who watches the evening news hears horror stories about how remodeling contractors start a job, collect a large down payment and then literally take off to the next town. This does happen, but most contractors are reputable. The quality of their work generally varies more than their ethics. First do some research on the type of remodeling job you are considering. Magazines such as Fine Homebuilding, Remodeling, Builder, Kitchen and Bath Business, Custom Builder, etc., are excellent sources for design ideas and general background. People often check with the Better Business Bureau, but this does not always provide reliable information.
Wired Magazine's yearly traveling technology shindig, NextFest, plants its roots in NYC this weekend. After starting in San Francisco in 2004 the show finally makes it to NYC. Billed as a WIRED's vision of a new world's fair, here you can "experience more than 130 exhibits from scientists, researchers, and inventors around the globe. WIRED NextFest features innovations in communication, design, entertainment, exploration, health, transportation, security, and green living." We were able to get an advance sneak preview yesterday. If somehow you had a chance to see last year's event in Chicago, there will be a few items familiar to you. Still, they turned up the interactivity quite a bit, and it's just as exciting show off to your friends. There is a lot to see at the show, and its less clear floor plan this year might make it easy to miss some cool things.
It may be overly dramatic to say this is the most important county commissioner race in Washington County's history, but there is no question it will affect the greatest number of people. Since 2000, Washington has become one of the fastest growing counties in the state. In that time, we've added 10,000 residents, our population growing at a rate of 7.6 percent - a full 2 percent faster than the state of Maryland as a whole. While spiraling housing prices have stalled the boom at the moment, it's likely only a pause in the trend and the next board of commissioners must demonstrate a deft hand at managing growth and growth's byproducts, both good and bad. We have chosen to endorse a mix of candidates who we believe will be able to find middle ground on a broad range of issues.

A deadly mobile home fire over the weekend has turned into a murder investigation. One man died, a woman is in critical condition, and police believe someone set the fire intentionally. Flames broke out early Sunday morning at the Tropicana Village mobile home park. The survivor is barely hanging on right now, according to police. The woman, thought to be in her early twenties, has burns and took in quite a bit of smoke. The man in the mobile home with her died in the fire and police believe someone had it in for the two of them. The couple was sleeping in the front bedroom as the mobile home filled with smoke. Fire investigators say they don't have an exact cause yet, but Metro Homicide detectives have already zeroed in on the man they think set the place on fire.
The James and Mary Berglund Hall or simply Berglund Hall will be constructed between Murdock Hall and Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center on the southeast corner of campus on Cedar Street. The building is 42,285 square feet on two floors and a partial lower level. The new building will house the College of Education, School of Business, Child Development Center, Oregon Holocaust Resource Center and the Berglund Center for Internet Studies. Trees have already been removed from the site to make way for the new construction project. The wood from these trees will be used in certain areas of the new building as was done with the University's new library. Excavation for the structural footings began last week. Soils removed during this work will be temporarily stored off-site and will be returned as backfill for the foundation and site grading.
