MIDDAY BUSINESS REPORT: KC ethanol firm announces third plant

Kansas City-based Alternative Energy Sources Inc. said today it plans to construct a third ethanol plant, though it continues to seek construction financing for all of the facilities.

Alternative Energy said it has taken an option on 100 acres at a business park in Greenville, Ill., which is 45 miles east of St. Louis.

The site is served by the Illinois Western Railroad on tracks adjacent to the acreage. It also has easy access to the interstate highway system.

Alternative Energy's announcement said construction on this third plant would begin within the next year, with the plant in operation in late 2008. Like two others the company announced, the Greenville plant would produce about 110 million gallons of ethanol a year.

This is the third site on which Alternative Energy has acquired an option with plans to build an ethanol plant.

Aircraft construction corp. to be formed by April - Russian ...

MOSCOW, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - The formation of the United Aircraft Building Corporation (UABC) will be completed by April 2007, Russia's industry and energy minister said Friday.

In a move to streamline the aviation industry, President Putin signed a resolution February 21 on forming the UABC, which will be a majority state-owned corporation consolidating aircraft construction companies and state assets engaged in the manufacture, design and sale of military, non-military, transport and unmanned aircraft.

Viktor Khristenko said in parliament the main elements of the new company have already been coordinated with all concerned departments.

The corporation, which will be governed by a collegial body, will consolidate its assets in the first quarter of 2007, and will place shares between 2007 and 2008.

Trailer fire forces family from home Mobile home called total loss ...

SHALERSVILLE A township family was forced to relocate Saturday following an early morning fire at their Infirmary Road residence.

According to the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department, a call was received at 8:15 a.m. Saturday for a report of a fully involved structure fire at 9329 Infirmary Road, Lot D8.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a single wide trailer engulfed in flames. All of the occupants of the home had already evacuated the building safely, according to fire crews.

The Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department was assisted in extinguishing the blaze by an engine and manpower from the Streetsboro Fire Department. The Garrettsville-Freedom-Nelson Joint Fire District also had been called but were canceled while en route to the scene.

Seven firefighters remained on the scene until it was cleared 10:45 a.m.

Manager to oversee juvenile home construction budget

A construction manager will be hired by Kalamazoo County to oversee construction of a $28.5 million juvenile home approved by voters in August.

The 64-bed juvenile home, adjacent to the current juvenile home at 1424 Gull Road, could open by late 2008 or early 2009, officials say.

County Administrator Donald Gilmer said the county will solicit bids for a construction manager who will be responsible for keeping the project within budget and on schedule. Changes during large construction projects can be frequent, costly and unnecessary, he said.

``If somebody starts blowing a bunch of smoke at you, you have got to know they are blowing smoke at you,'' Gilmer said. ``It might not be obvious to a non-professional, so (a construction manager will be) our eyes and ears on the job.''

Gilmer said he wants the manager in place in November, before a contract is awarded to an architectural and engineering firm.

Mobile-home park to make upgrade, pay fine

A Caroline County trailer park has agreed to correct problems with its wastewater treatment plant and to pay a $7,000 state fine.

According to DEQ, the company was cited for a number of violations between December 2005, when its permit expired, and June of this year.

Minarchi received a warning letter and nine notices of violation for: failure to provide financial assurance as an operator; late submittal of a discharge monitoring report; failure to reapply for a new permit; failure to provide information on analysis, certification and maintenance logs and temperature-monitoring data; incomplete submittal of an application for a new permit; and discharge of effluent into state waters without a permit.

VoIP-optimized home gateway design runs Linux

Infineon is shipping a Linux-based hardware/software reference design for integrated access devices (IADs). The ADSL2+ Residential Gateway (RG) design is based on an Infineon MIPS32 SoC (system-on-chip) with integrated VoIP (voice-over-IP) co-processor and ADSL2/2+ transceiver. The design also offers 802.11n connectivity and a DECT (digital enhanced cordless telecommunications) base station.

Infineon's Residential Gateway design comprises:Danube -- A highly integrated SoC (system-on-chip) based on a 32-bit 24KEc MIPS core, and integrating a VoIP co-processor, two integrated codecs, an 8/16-bit NOR/NAND controller, and an ADSL2/2+ (asymmetric digital subscriber line) transceiver supporting data rates up to 24Mbps. I/O includes USB 2.0, two Ethernet interfaces, SPI with DMA, serial UART with hardware flow control, JTAG/EJTAG, and 32 general purpose I/Os.
