NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - A man was charged with five counts of murder Sunday in the slayings of a mother and her four children in a mobile home, authorities said. Michael Simmons, 41, appeared at a bond hearing via video link from the Charleston County Jail on Sunday and was ordered held without bond. Officers discovered the bodies, including that of a 6-year-old, at the home Saturday after responding to a call. According to an arrest affidavit, a witness saw the bodies in the home then called police. The affidavit said Simmons was captured as he tried to drive away from the scene. The victims were shot with a handgun, the affidavit said. Police have not identified a motive. Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten identified the victims as Betra Rainey, 39, and her children William Rainey, 16, Hakiem Rainey, 13, Malachia Robinson, 8, and Samenia Robinson, 6.
(SGT-HCMC) Construction Company 585, an arm of Civil Engineering Construction Corporation 5 (Cienco 5), yesterday began work on a new apartment building project capitalized at around VND600 billion (US$37.5 million) on the outskirts of HCMC. The project, which will bring a new urban look to the city's less developed district of Tan Phu, comprises five 17-story blocks covering a 14,000-square-meter site and bordering the 24-meter-wide Nguyen Son Street and Thoai Ngoc Hau Street that will be widened to 60 meters. When the Phu Thanh project is completed by 2009, there will be an additional 3,000 homes in the center of the outlying district, four kilometers from Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The apartments are quoted at VND9 million per square meter.
CARLISLE, Pa. A Pennsylvania fugitive accused in his home state of trading money, liquor and drugs for sex with teenage boys has been arrested in eastern Arizona. Authorities say 56-year-old Clair Smith of Miller Township, Pennsylvania, had been told on October 15th that he would be charged the next day with more than 260 counts. Smith vanished, but was captured Saturday after police in Holbrook spotted his black S-U-V. Perry County's district attorney declines to say why police suspected Smith would be in Arizona. MIAMI -- Some residents of Blue Lakes Mobile Home Park in west Miami-Dade County protested Tuesday, saying their landlord is harassing them to leave their homes. Residents marched and carried hand-painted signs, asking county officials for help. Residents said the landlord posted an eviction notice in March. They claimed that once the announcement was made, they were subject to threats and harassment to get them to move out sooner. .
At 17, Pearson was the youngest member of the U.S. Navy construction battalion in the entire Pacific fleet in 1963. He did two tours of Vietnam, where he built houses and hospitals. He left his hometown of Fenwick in 1963, made his home in California and didn't return to his roots until 1989. Pearson, 60, retired from Tomco Tool & Dye in Belding in 2001. He made another lifestyle change around that same time. Jerry and Doris Pearson have been married for five years now. A Belding native, Doris, 64, served as the executive director of the Belding Housing Commission for years and later privately managed local apartments. She is also retired and now makes her home with Jerry and their 2-year-old Belgian Tervuren, a quick-witted shepherd dog name Kita. Jerry has five grandchildren while Doris has 13 plus three great-grandchildren and a fourth on the way.
Hannes Babak, owner of H. &F. Babak Construction Company Limited, yesterday announced his decision to sell all of his shares and sever the $8 million contract with Associated Grocers. The recently appointed Grand Bahama Port Author-ity Chairman said the move comes amid allegations of a 'conflict of interest' and most recently, controversy over the Associated Grocers contract. "Since my appointment as Chairman of The Grand Bahama Port Authority on June 1, 2006, there have been allegations of a conflict of interest between my role as chairman of the Port Authority and the business activities of H.&F. Babak Construction Company Lim-ited," he said. Babak revealed that he was selling all his shares to avoid such allegations in the future and explained that he was doing so "at a great personal loss.
The Sedalia City Council gave the boot to a Jefferson City contractor Monday, and hired another firm to complete the third phase of the combined sewer overflow improvements. The City Council hired Lehman Construction, of California, Mo., to finish work started by J.C. Industries, of Jefferson City. The work to be completed on the third phase of the combined sewer overflow (CSO) improvements includes a line beside Hubbard Park and connecting about 19 properties to the new system. State mandates required the city to separate the storm water and sanitary sewers. "Given the work we've seen on the project, we felt it better to do a change order for the remainder of the work," said City Administrator Keith Riesberg. "We are much more comfortable with Lehman's abilities." Mr.
