IT Consultants Direct has launched a contractor induction service to provide IT contractors a fixed finder's fee, replacing the industry standard of commission. Company managing director Richard Simmons says: “We are convinced that our clients will welcome the fixed fee approach as an opportunity to greatly reduce their recruiting costs whilst acquiring contractors of the highest calibre." The service operates like any other contract vacancy. The difference comes when the client selects a candidate. A straightforward finder's fee of £750 (plus VAT) is charged, and the contractor and client then can negotiate their own fees and terms. .

Like most homeowners, Alan Farber had no expertise with remodeling when he hired a contractor to redo his kitchen. "I ended up having another guy come in and fix it and wasn't really happy with that either." .
LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- Dozens of residents face eviction in Snohomish County because many mobile home parks statewide are being sold off to big developers. State officials estimate statewide by October 2007, 21 mobile home communities will be closed forcing nearly 700 families to move. More than half of the mobile homes being sold are in Snohomish County. The last thing you want do is tear down your own when you don't want to leave, so it feels like somebody's got a gun to our heads and asked to pull the trigger, mobile home advocate Kylin Parks said. Parks has successfully rallied residents together and convinced the Housing Authority of Snohomish County to try and buy the property from the developer. If you would like to know more or would like to help you can email Parks at kylinparks@yahoo.com .
In June, I started writing Knape's Corner, a Web log at The Press' online site, mlive.com/grpress. It's a place for tidbits and sometimes random thoughts that do not make it into the paper you're holding. Most of the time the blog is about the Grand Rapids development scene. Sometimes it's not. Occasionally, so I've been told, it's been useful, amusing and interesting. At times, my wife tells me, it misses the mark. But always it's an additional take on local happenings you won't see anywhere in these pages, with links, old photos and other items I dig out and post. Today's column is a digest of entries from this past week. Think of it like a visit to the grocery store when they have a bunch of free samples. Some might be good.
