  Library contractor recommended

Southern Hall County is closer to getting its long-awaited library after the county settled Monday on a construction manager for the project.

Scroggs & Grizzel Contracting Inc. submitted the low bid for construction of the $6 million project, County Administrator Jim Shuler told Hall County commissioners at their work session Monday.

Project management fees and other contracting fees will cost about $300,000, including a 3.75 percent construction management fee.

The board could vote on the matter at its meeting Thursday.

Earlier this year, the county purchased 5 acres on Spout Springs Road in Flowery Branch from the developers of Sterling on the Lake, Hall County Commission Chairman Tom Oliver said.

The cost was about $100,000 per acre.

Crews could start work later this year on the site, which fronts Spout Springs and will be accessed by Lake Sterling Boulevard, the main entrance to the sprawling, upscale subdivision.

BRENDEL HIGHTOWER: Shelby Township/Macomb County

APPEAL: Shelby Township is one of the fastest-growing communities in Macomb County as measured by new home construction. This is rapidly changing many areas, especially the northern and eastern sections of the township, from a mostly rural to a suburban landscape.

According to Shelby Township's master plan, 5,300 new single-family homes were added between 1990 and 2002. And according to Housing Consultants in Clarkston, nearly 4,000 residential building permits have been issued since 2000.

Sewer lines are being constructed along major streets, helping to add to the growth of this attractive community that offers a variety of subdivisions, some with man-made lakes and water fountains. The northern and eastern sections have larger lots and larger houses. Almost 100% of the township has city water, and about 55% has city sewers, township Supervisor Ralph Maccarone says.

Defending BBCHS

I have been an employee of BBCHS for almost 30 years. Before I go any further, let me say that it is a great place to work. The staff and administrators are great people to work with. They do a fantastic job with the funds they have available.

That being said, I would like to talk to all the armchair quarterbacks out there. You know, it's really easy to sit back and come up with all kinds of ideas that aren't real solutions. But until you've walked a mile in someone else's moccasins, don't think you have all the answers.

If CUT, OUTRAGE, and the Ron Hansens want to really do something, I have a few suggestions.

1.) Get your bachelor's in education, go for your master's, and then become a teacher or an administrator. Become a part of the solution.

Female prospects get better by degree

Tonya Bohannon: I pursued the MSc to further my career in IT and to be given the respect the degree deserves. My employer asked me to assist a contractor in designing a new database that would make my co-workers’ daily workload more efficient. I was the only one in the department who had a BSc in Information Systems and understood the departmental needs more than the contractor. This incident played a key role in my decision to pursue an MSc in IT.

The technology sector is perceived as a male-dominated industry in which it is difficult for women to succeed. Have you faced challenges as a female working in IT?

There are definitely gender obstacles in the technology profession. I’ve endured many derogatory comments made about my choice in the technology field.
