A resident in Dukes Mobile Home Park, 5460 Harlan Street, suffered minor burns this morning when a portable electric heater sparked a blaze that raced through one mobile home and spread to another early this morning in Arvada. The Arvada Fire Protection District fire marshals office determined the portable heater had been placed too near combustible materials. The initial call came at 1:28 a.m. and the first fire unit arrived six minutes later to find the mobile home fully involved. The intense heat ignited a second mobile home. Both units were a total loss. Another nearby mobile home only suffered minor heat damage but a pickup truck in front was damaged as well. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. .
LONGVIEW - A half-dozen new commercial buildings are nearing completion in Longview, and with more on the way, the area is deepening its economic roots, city and business leaders say. New buildings and stores mean rising tax revenue for Longview, jobs for area residents and services for a growing population. "All of these represent a positive outlook for our community," Longview Finance Director Kurt Sacha said. In 2005, there were 124 permits for commercial projects in Longview. So far this year, the city has issued 127. It's too early to know how much tax revenue and jobs those new and expanded offices and retail business will generate, Sacha said. However, the new buildings already have increased property tax revenues, and a healthy commercial sector is a good indicator of overall economic health.
SANTA CLARITA - Three new members have been named to a committee appointed to oversee voter-approved bonds for high school and junior-high construction projects that have overrun projected costs by millions of dollars. The three are Anne Gibson, an elementary school teacher in the Sulphur Springs School District; Joseph Messina, a consultant with The Wildcat Group, Inc.; and Thomas Troesch, a software engineer and consultant. They were selected from a pool of applicants to fill unexpired terms on the 16-member committee created in the William S. Hart Union High School District. The committee - made up of business people, parents and representatives from various community groups - is charged with overseeing the expenditure of funds from a $158 million bond measure passed by Hart district voters in 2001.
