Marijuana May Slow Alzheimer’s Memory Loss

New evidence from animal models suggests marijuana may contain compounds that slow the memory loss associated with Alzheimer's disease. Older rats treated with a synthetic chemical similar to marijuana significantly improved their ability to navigate a maze. Researchers believe the strong anti-inflammatory effects of marijuana slow Alzheimer's progression.

The link between chronic inflammation and the progression of Alzheimer's is compelling, said Gary Wenk, a study co-author and a professor of psychology at Ohio State University.

“Inflammation in the brain is part of aging," Wenk said. “It happens to almost all of us as we age. But in some cases, this inflammation gets out of hand and causes serious damage."

Treatment with a synthetic compound similar to marijuana reduced inflammation in older rats in addition to making the animals “smarter," said Wenk, who is also a professor of neuroscience and molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics.

Mobile Home Scammers in Big Legal Trouble

A group of men accused of scamming mobile home owners across San Antonio are in some big legal trouble. The Attorney General says Andrew and Edward Huizar and David Barroso were unlicensed by the State when they sold consumers used mobile homes. The men are accused of fraud by issuing bad titles and leaving consumers with debts for unpaid taxes and other liens.

Court documents show the men used the business names A&E Investments, Sweet Homes, Harper Enterprises and Dilley Mobile Homes. The Attorney General just hit the Huizars and Barroso with a court-ordered legal injunction. It freezes their bank accounts and shuts down their allegedly illegal business practices.

In a statement about the temporary injunction, Attorney General Abbott said, "This will deprive them of any further ability to take hard-earned money from innocent consumers dreaming of home ownership."

Abbott is asking the Manufactured Home Division to issue clear titles to all of Huizar and Barroso's alleged victims.

Local fireman's bravery earns state and local recognition

Volunteer fireman Mike Shrout risks his life to help others because that's what he does, not for the glory that follows.

During an open house held during Fire Safety Week in Fulton, Shrout was presented with the State Fire Marshals Lifesaving Award and an Award of Valor - two of the highest recognitions a fireman can receive.Shrout doesn't believe his actions deserve special honor. Following the presentation, the 25-year fire veteran said, “The award means a lot to me, but I don't feel I did anything that any other firefighter would not have done. That's what we do."Shrout was recommended for the awards for the “selfless action" he took this March in saving the life of a Fulton woman, who was trapped in the basement of her collapsed, tornado-ravaged home.According to Central Fire District Protection reports, the newly built modular home was lifted off its foundation and had caved in and split in two with homeowner Joyce King trapped under the debris. Her husband Lawrence - who had escaped and crawled to a neighbor's house for help - also was injured.
