  Berglund Hall Construction Report

The James and Mary Berglund Hall or simply Berglund Hall will be constructed between Murdock Hall and Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center on the southeast corner of campus on Cedar Street. The building is 42,285 square feet on two floors and a partial lower level. The new building will house the College of Education, School of Business, Child Development Center, Oregon Holocaust Resource Center and the Berglund Center for Internet Studies.

Trees have already been removed from the site to make way for the new construction project. The wood from these trees will be used in certain areas of the new building as was done with the University's new library.

Excavation for the structural footings began last week. Soils removed during this work will be temporarily stored off-site and will be returned as backfill for the foundation and site grading.

Mess hall contractor arrested after 400 Iraqi policemen poisoned

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The Iraqi authorities have arrested the contractor in charge of the mess hall at a Numaniyah training base, where up to 400 police officers were poisoned by their evening meal on Sunday.

Lab test results of the food and water suggest it was caused by negligence on the part of the contractor, not an attack, media quoted Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Abdul Karim Khalaf as saying Tuesday.

Also arrested were the four cooks who made the meal, Khalaf added.

On Sunday, hundreds of Iraqi policemen fell ill from poisoning at the base in the twon of Numaniyah after having their evening meal breaking their daily Ramadan fast.

Khalaf said there were no deaths despite earlier reports.

State looks into contractor's work on payroll system

SANTA FE (AP) - The work of a Virginia contractor that installed New Mexico's problem-plagued payroll and accounting computer system is being reviewed by state officials. The state confirmed Tuesday that the review is focusing on the work of Maximus Inc., which beat out three other firms to win the contract for the new payroll and accounting system in early 2005."Did the vendor meet all its obligations?" is among questions being asked, said Carroll Cagle, chair of the state Information Technology Commission, which has been monitoring the conversion to the new system.Payments to thousands of jurors statewide were delayed because of the system, and workers at more than three dozen state agencies have lodged complaints since the system went online in July. Some people say the system is so complex that patience is needed, but switching over will ultimately modernize how New Mexico purchases goods and pays employees.
