The Short Case On Downey Financial

Amit Chokshi submits: Downey Financial Corp. (“DSL" or the “Company") is a savings and loans holding company for Downey Savings and Loan Association, a regional bank based in Downey, California with just under 100 full-service branches across parts of CA and AZ. As a regional savings and loan association, DSL's main business is loan origination, focusing primarily on residential real estate mortgages in California and mortgage-backed securities (“MBS"). While the Company focuses on first mortgage loan origination secured by residential properties, it also originates multi-family and commercial property loans, home equity loans (“HELS"), and home equity lines of credit (“HELOC"). DSL also provides construction loan financing for residential and commercial projects.

A key component of DSL's investment portfolio has been its emphasis on the origination of adjustable rate mortgages (“ARMs") for single family homes loans, including sub-prime loans.

New-Home Construction Down Nearly 20% in a Year

(AXcess News) Washington - An economic slowdown has caused homebuyers to think twice about buying a new home as inflation drove up living costs for most Americans thanks to a spike in energy prices and growing concerns in the workplace. New-home construction in August fell 6 percent, the Commerce Department reported, with new-home construction down nearly 20 percent compared to the same period last year when the boom inhousing was still at its peak.

Total housing starts dropped 6.0 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.665 million units, according to figures released by the Commerce Department today. The pace of new-home construction was down 19.8 percent from a year earlier, which was a record-breaking year.

Builders slowed the pace of single-family home construction by 5.9 percent for the month to 1.360 million units, a 20.6 percent drop from a year earlier.

Contractor chosen to finish Pine Loft Road

Bauerly Bros., Inc., Sauk Rapids, has been awarded the bid to complete the approximately 600-foot unfinished section of 21st Avenue (Pine Loft Road) and connect it to Highway 95.

Bauerly had the low bid of $301,801. Hardrives, Inc., the only other bidder, came in at $322,313. The engineers estimate for the project was $243,429.

Connecting the road to Highway 95 will involve installing three turn lanes and adjusting the current Highway 95 median at the location, all part of the bid.

A left turn lane off Highway 95 onto 21st Avenue will be installed for westbound traffic.

There will be a right turn lane and a left turn lane installed for eastbound traffic. The right turn lane for eastbound traffic will allow turning onto 21st Avenue. The left turn lane for eastbound drivers will allow turning into the residential area on the north side of Highway 95.

Editor's Notebook: One Death Too Many

This is the first time I've attended the funeral of a worker killed on the job. I write about such tragedies all the time. I write about preventing such tragedies.

by Sandy Smith

I rarely write about the tears on the faces of the family members, friends and co-workers as they say their last goodbyes. If I'm going to be completely honest with you, I don't like to think about those tears.

I came face-to-face with those tears today.

For people working in downtown Cleveland on Sept. 6, it nearly was impossible not to attend the funeral of this particular worker. You see, the death of Cleveland Police Detective Jonathan "A.J." Schroeder made headlines when he was shot and killed attempting to arrest a suspect in a rape and aggravated robbery on Cleveland's near-West side, not far from where I live.
