Council has approved measures to block contractors working for the town from hiring illegal aliens and to bar illegal aliens from obtaining business licenses. "What we're really doing here is we're changing the perception ... that Herndon was very open to illegal aliens," Town Council member Dennis Husch said Tuesday. "This town council is attempting to change that perception." As a result, Town Manager Stephen F. Owen will add language to contracts that will prohibit contractors from hiring illegals and requires business-license applicants to sign a notarized statement saying they are eligible to work legally in the United States. Mr. Husch also said the measures do not create new regulations, just tighten existing ones.

If I'm going to be completely honest with you, I don't like to think about those tears. I came face-to-face with those tears today. For people working in downtown Cleveland on Sept. 6, it nearly was impossible not to attend the funeral of this particular worker. You see, the death of Cleveland Police Detective Jonathan "A.J." Schroeder made headlines when he was shot and killed attempting to arrest a suspect in a rape and aggravated robbery on Cleveland's near-West side, not far from where I live.
CASTRO VALLEY - Construction began today on a four-year, $121 million freeway-widening project aimed at reducing one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in the East Bay. The project calls for widening Interstate Highway 238, the two-mile freeway that connects Interstate Highway 580 and Interstate Highway 880, from four to six lanes with auxiliary lanes between on- and off-ramps. I-238 is a major freight truck corridor from the state's agricultural heartland in San Joaquin County to the port of Oakland as well as an important commute and recreational route. Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority officials, who held a groundbreaking ceremony in the parking lot of Neighborhood Church in Castro Valley, said the improvements would provide additional capacity and enhancement safety by easing the movement of trucks crossing from I-580 to I-238.

More Homebuilder Troubles KB Home in Los Angeles said it has received a letter purporting to be a notice of default under the indenture related to its 6-1/4% senior notes due 2015. The letter asserts that KB Home is in default under the indenture because of a delay in filing its quarterly report with the Securities and Exchange Commission for its third quarter ended Aug. 31, 2006. The report was due earlier this month.
