Since March 2005, when Gainesville ordered the Building Systems Network chief executive officer to remove a partially-finished modular house in Waters Edge subdivision, Smereczynsky has sued in Hall County and federal court, rallied interest from the modular construction industry nationwide, and regularly pleaded his case to area media. "I've chosen to continue the fight," Smereczynsky said last week. "... I'm in the deal to the end." The deal has reached a new boiling point. The city, feeding off a state Court of Appeals denial of Building System's appeal, on Sept. 12 gave the Gainesville company 30 days to remove the home on Waters Edge Drive. Smereczynsky is seeking a court stay. An attorney representing the city's insurance company has also filed to dismiss constitutional claims in Smereczynsky's second lawsuit.
We are very busy at the moment. WBS - which is based in Coalisland - has five operating divisions covering modular buildings, modular homes and timber framed buildings, property development, windows, and roofing. All divisions are working at capacity at the moment and turnover has seen a steady increase over the years. We have just completed one of the largest high specification off-site construction projects in Ireland at Crumlin Hospital in Dublin. This involved the building of two new specialist medical facilities in the form of an MRI nuclear medicine facility and a haematology and oncology unit. ANY EXCITING PROJECTS IN THE PIPELINE? At present the window business is expanding with the introduction of a new aluminium profile system to the company, which will complement our PVC range.
Tired of your cramped, dark kitchen? Has your bathroom seen better days? Need an extra bedroom or more space? While some homeowners automatically hire a contractor to get what they want, others toy with the idea of doing the work themselves, acting as their own contractor. After all, you aren’t required to hire a contractor to make improvements to your own property. The law allows you to do it yourself. However, keep in mind that every community has its own rules regarding owner-builders. We know of one, for example, that doesn’t allow owner-builders to do their own electrical work. Always check with your local building department or permit office for specifics before hanging out your construction company shingle. As an owner-builder, you may not need a contractor’s license, but you are expected to get a building permit where required and to comply with all applicable building codes and ordinances.

(SGT-HCMC) Construction Company 585, an arm of Civil Engineering Construction Corporation 5 (Cienco 5), yesterday began work on a new apartment building project capitalized at around VND600 billion (US$37.5 million) on the outskirts of HCMC. The project, which will bring a new urban look to the city's less developed district of Tan Phu, comprises five 17-story blocks covering a 14,000-square-meter site and bordering the 24-meter-wide Nguyen Son Street and Thoai Ngoc Hau Street that will be widened to 60 meters. When the Phu Thanh project is completed by 2009, there will be an additional 3,000 homes in the center of the outlying district, four kilometers from Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The apartments are quoted at VND9 million per square meter.
RED BLUFF - A house built in 90 days - from the pouring of foundation to the handing over of the key. That's the wave of the future in home construction, according to Tuscan Homes general manager Tom Furze. He walked through the interior of a home on Faye Street Friday where just four days earlier the concrete foundation had laid exposed. The four-bedroom, two-bath, 2,300-square foot home was built in Arizona and shipped to Tehama County on the back of trucks. But this is not a manufactured home. It's modular, built in three pieces that were moved into place by a crane on Wednesday. The difference between a modular and manufactured home is like night and day, according to Furze. A modular is a stick-built home (using 2x6's), is energy-efficient and will appreciate over time.
The contractor responsible for works on Civil Aviation Avenue, the road to the airport, has been fined Lm4,000 for traffic management shortcomings, Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett said. In an interview with The Times, Mr Mugliett explained that contractors are responsible for traffic management close to the site of works, with the rest left in the Malta Transport Authority's hands. But traffic management close to the road - which was completed just weeks ago after giving motorists a headache for months - left much to be desired. At one point a hand-written fluorescent sign on a concrete boulder was pointing the way to the airport but someone unfamiliar with the local roads would have been sent on a wild-goose chase. The minister said the authority's main complaint was the contractor switching the lanes he was working on without informing the ADT's architects, something that at times led to chaos.
