How do I evaluate various contractors? -- Jean W. Dear Jean: Everyone who watches the evening news hears horror stories about how remodeling contractors start a job, collect a large down payment and then literally take off to the next town. This does happen, but most contractors are reputable. The quality of their work generally varies more than their ethics. First do some research on the type of remodeling job you are considering. Magazines such as Fine Homebuilding, Remodeling, Builder, Kitchen and Bath Business, Custom Builder, etc., are excellent sources for design ideas and general background. People often check with the Better Business Bureau, but this does not always provide reliable information.
HOOPER BAY, AK (October 23, 2006) - A fire that ravaged much of this small town on August 4 was the reason a parishioner of First Covenant Church in Mason City, Iowa, was headed to the cold tundra of Alaska. But the warmth and goodwill that was experienced over a three-week period was well worth whatever inconvenience that Bill Bowen may have encountered.Bowen was one of more than two dozen people involved in rebuilding the town of Hooper Bay after 14 homes, a store and the high school were destroyed last summer. In all, the group built five new homes for the village - population 1,100 - located in western Alaska on the Bering Sea. Bowen traveled to Alaska on September 14 and arrived home on October 10. His team worked from daylight (9 a.m.) until 7 p.m. six days each week, and the group invested an estimated 2,700 hours of volunteer labor during Bowen’s time in Alaska.Bowen’s trip was made possible through support provided by the church and individuals.
In a tongue lashing that would have made Charlotte Church proud, Wales biggest export has been sounding off. At her husband. Michael Douglas - whose career seems to have stepped up again of late - has been gushing about his sexy female co-stars. In a recent interview to promote The Sentinel, Michael got rather eloquent about the rest of the cast. Douglas declared that he had a crush on Kim Basinger while discussion on the other female lead, Eva Longoria, got a little more specific. The petite Desperate Housewives star has, in MDs opinion, a fantastic butt. .
More creepy than criminal, a human skull was unearthed from beneath a backyard in Bethlehem, Pa. A landscaper digging up shrubs discovered the remains and called police. Officers, Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek and others continued digging for more bones into the afternoon. Lysek said he found other small artifacts but nothing too significant. He said the skull, just 18 inches below the ground, must have risen toward the surface after being there for quite some time. The coroner didn't immediately expect anything suspicious, and Bethlehem police believe there will be no need for any criminal investigation. Lysek said similar items have been dug up before in the surrounding area, just 50 yards or so from Moravian Cemetery.
The future of Napa Olympia Mobilodge may look a lot younger. A week ago the city of American Canyon moratorium expired on the conversion of the senior mobile home park into a facility for all ages.The American Canyon City Council imposed the 45-day moratorium in July, after Napa Olympia Mobilodge owner Ken Waterhouse of Roseville announced plans to convert the property into a family mobile home park. The City Council approved an interim emergency ordinance a week after dozens of seniors protested Waterhouse’s plan.Bill Ross, American Canyon city attorney, said the City Council will consider a variety of options Oct. 5, including another moratorium.Napa Olympia Mobilodge is one of two mobile home parks for seniors in American Canyon. It is no place for children, seniors have repeatedly said.
