HAMPTON -- Q: I read that Hampton's plan to build four new schools will create 7,000 more seats across the district. How will they be filled? A: About 2,100 students will move from trailers into permanent classrooms. Another 2,100 will be filled with students currently taking classes in storage rooms, the cafeteria and on stages because there is not enough classroom space in their schools. About 2,300 will be relocated from old school buildings that need replacing. That leaves 500 spare seats to accommodate any increases in enrollment. HAMPTON Q: Would it not be cheaper to renovate Wythe Elementary School than build a new school for those students? A: School officials say no. The cost to renovate Wythe to meet current building codes and program requirements would be about $13.5 million.
Dianne Michael never thought it would be easy raising a daughter while managing her career at a large investment firm. But she never imagined dropping out of the corporate world, either. Then she lost her job in a downsizing in 2002 and temporarily took up independent consulting. "I could clearly see the benefits both for my family and for me--how much I enjoyed taking my daughter to a doctor's appointment or a school event," Michael said. Now, in her new job for a fledgling staffing firm, she hopes to help other professional women find the flexibility she enjoys by placing them with family-friendly companies. Michael heads the Chicago-area office of Mom Corps, which bills itself as a matchmaker between employers hunting for experienced talent and professionals looking for non-traditional career opportunities, ranging from part-time and project work to flexible full-time jobs.

Lafayette home health company buys Florida business: LHC Group has acquired Lifeline Home Health Care's Florida operations for an undisclosed amount. This is the second major purchase of a Lifeline asset this year; earlier LHC bought out Lifeline's Kentucky operations. National housing market getting softer: Housing starts dropped 6% in August, reports the U.S. Commerce Department, twice as fast as expected. This is the lowest point for housing starts in three years. The sluggish pace of homebuilding, along with a slight increase in prices for finished goods, increases the chances the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged at its meeting Wednesday. Those Enron and WorldCom guys got their start somewhere: Fifty-six percent of business students surveyed admitted to cheating at least once during the last academic year, compared to 47% of graduate students in non-business programs, according to a report set for publication in the Academy of Management Learning & Education.
