LOGAN - The completion of the latest "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project marked a new beginning for the Pauni family of Logan on Sunday afternoon.
Ati Pauni Velasquez, the oldest daughter of Danny and Janet Pauni, remained in Logan last week while her mother and siblings cruised the Virgin Islands. With her husband and 14-month-old daughter by her side, Ati, 19, watched a miracle unfold.
"I have no regrets at all," she said Sunday afternoon just minutes before her family urged the ABC crew to "Move that bus." "It's been crazy, hectic, exciting and unbelievable."
Ali was among thousands of spectators who rehearsed scenes using energetic Pauni relatives as stand-ins. During one of the practice runs, the step on the limousine cracked and had to be removed before the family could be delivered.

Home construction, sales projected to decline this year

Given the Pittsburgh region's slow pace of employment growth and declining population, it's not all surprising that the housing market is due for a slowdown.

"The area's weak rate of household formation limits growth of housing demand, and higher mortgage rates have helped further soften demand growth," noted the August economic forecast for the seven-county region by the Economics Division of PNC Financial Services Group.

PNC is projecting a 5.4 percent decline in housing construction for 2006 -- to 5,300 units versus 5,601 units last year -- based on its analysis of housing permit application data from the U.S. Census Bureau, according to Richard Moody, a PNC regional economist.

That includes a drop of about 8 percent -- 4,300 units versus 4,672 units -- in the larger, single-family segment of the market covering Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Building collapse in Vietnam kills seven construction workers

Hanoi- Seven construction workers were killed when a four-story building under renovation collapsed in southern Vietnam, official said Saturday. Police had detained the owner of the house for questioning about the accident in southern Long An province on Friday afternoon, according to Nguyen Manh Tuan, chairman of the local People' Committee. "He may be charged for violating the law on construction and causing severe consequences," Tuan said. The collapse appeared to have been caused by renovations to the private home to add two new floors to the home, which had previously had only two stories, Tuan said. Of the 23 workers on the project, 12 were outside the house at the time of the sudden collapse. Rescue workers found six bodies and pulled five people alive from the wreckage. One of the rescued workers died of injuries in hospital.
