Mobile home fire causes $1,000 damage

A preliminary investigation Thursday pointed to old heat tape as the cause of a small mobile home fire, said Lincoln Fire Capt. Randy Bohaty. At 5:02 p.m., firefighters responded to a burning smell underneath 3700 Cornhusker Highway, No. 1A. Firefighters removed the skirting from the mobile home and extinguished the fire within 10 to 15 minutes, Bohaty said. The fire was contained to the skirting and wiring underneath the home, he said. The home, owned by Cheryl Ford, sustained about $1,000 damage, according to preliminary estimates, Bohaty said. No one was injured. The American Red Cross assisted the family with lodging Thursday night.Afterward, white foam sat in a pool outside Ford’s home. The foam is a new feature on the station’s new fire engine, and Thursday’s fire was this shift’s first use of the foam on a residential fire, Bohaty said.

Recommend a contractor?

Q: I have a property in Santa Venicia. I want to build a second unit on the property and was wondering if you could recommend any contractors for this project. - C.A.

A: At work my husband is in upper management, but at home, he actually enjoys landscaping and home-improvement projects. Whenever I need a contractor, I just ask him.

Planning consultant Carol Whitmire provides this information. "Your property is under the jurisdiction of the county of Marin. You should visit the planning and building departments first. In any jurisdiction in Marin, a second unit requires a second-unit permit, which is a planning permit. Subsequent to the planning permit, you will need a building permit, including plumbing, electric, etc. In the county, you may also need a septic permit, although I think Santa Venicia is sewered.

MIDDAY BUSINESS REPORT: KC ethanol firm announces third plant

Kansas City-based Alternative Energy Sources Inc. said today it plans to construct a third ethanol plant, though it continues to seek construction financing for all of the facilities.

Alternative Energy said it has taken an option on 100 acres at a business park in Greenville, Ill., which is 45 miles east of St. Louis.

The site is served by the Illinois Western Railroad on tracks adjacent to the acreage. It also has easy access to the interstate highway system.

Alternative Energy's announcement said construction on this third plant would begin within the next year, with the plant in operation in late 2008. Like two others the company announced, the Greenville plant would produce about 110 million gallons of ethanol a year.

This is the third site on which Alternative Energy has acquired an option with plans to build an ethanol plant.

New IT contractor induction concept is launched

IT Consultants Direct has launched a contractor induction service to provide IT contractors a fixed finder's fee, replacing the industry standard of commission.

Company managing director Richard Simmons says: “We are convinced that our clients will welcome the fixed fee approach as an opportunity to greatly reduce their recruiting costs whilst acquiring contractors of the highest calibre."

The service operates like any other contract vacancy. The difference comes when the client selects a candidate. A straightforward finder's fee of £750 (plus VAT) is charged, and the contractor and client then can negotiate their own fees and terms.

Scam Artist Posing as EPB Contractor

The Electric Power Board warns that someone is posing as an EPB contract worker. A customer told police the man stopped at her house and tried to get inside as an EPB contractor. She became suspicious and told him to leave. After she confirmed through EPB that he was not a contractor, the woman called police.

The suspect was driving a full size pick up with a Camden, Tennessee electrical contractor decal on the side door. The scam artist is apparently targeting the elderly.

Here are tips from EPB on how to protect yourself against this kind of scam : * Prior to any type of service that requires entry to a customer's home; an EPB representative will notify the customer to schedule an appointment.

* EPB utilizes the services of the following contractors: ECI, Advanced Power & Lighting, Dillard Smith Company, Wolf Tree Company, Pike Electric, Thompson Landscaping, Asplundh Tree Experts, Adman Electric, Hayes Network, and Inner City Electric.
