Strengthening Latin economies stems the flow of illegal immigrants

There certainly is the possibility that terrorists could take advantage of the United States' porous borders to enter the country.

But, for the most part, the people who slip over the borders illegally are simply looking for work. That's also true of people who enter legally and then overstay their visas; they just want to work.

The economic incentive behind illegal immigration has never been a secret. But a new report by the Inter-American Development Bank puts numbers behind assumptions.

Surveys were conducted in New York, Los Angeles and Miami; legal and illegal immigrants were included in the surveys.

The results? Latin Americans working in the United States will send $45 billion home this year, a 12 percent increase over 2005.

Mexico received the largest amount last year, $20 billion.

Samy Vellu Asks Highway Contractor To Repair Landslide Area

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has asked the contractor of the Duta-Hulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) to undertake remedial work at the site of the landslide in Wangsa Maju. "I have directed the contractor to start work as soon as possible. I have also asked the Highway Authority of Malaysia to investigate the landslide and submit a full report on the incident," he told Bernama when contacted in London where he is attending the 13th International Transportation System World Congress. The minister said although the cause of the landslide was not known yet, the main contractor of the expressway had been asked to take all measures to complete the remedial work fast. The landslide, which occurred at about 7.10pm Monday following a downpour, resulted in the evacuation of nearly 700 people living in four blocks of low cost flats.

MS. BUILDER: Do research to find a contractor

Dear Ms. Builder: I am going to have a major remodeling job done at my home. This is my first major project, so I need to find a competent remodeling contractor. How do I evaluate various contractors? -- Jean W.

Dear Jean: Everyone who watches the evening news hears horror stories about how remodeling contractors start a job, collect a large down payment and then literally take off to the next town. This does happen, but most contractors are reputable. The quality of their work generally varies more than their ethics.

First do some research on the type of remodeling job you are considering. Magazines such as Fine Homebuilding, Remodeling, Builder, Kitchen and Bath Business, Custom Builder, etc., are excellent sources for design ideas and general background.

People often check with the Better Business Bureau, but this does not always provide reliable information.

Expert says oil boon imminent

LAFAYETTE — High oil prices and the recent discovery of an untapped petroleum reserve in the Gulf of Mexico will be a boon for Lafayette, a noted economist told business leaders Thursday.

The annual job growth rate in the Lafayette metropolitan area for 2007 and 2008 is forecast at 2.5 percent, economist Loren Scott told a luncheon crowd at the Independent Weekly’s IndExpo business conference.

"That would make you the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the state," he said.

Scott, a professor emeritus of economics at LSU and former department chairman at the university in Baton Rouge, is one of the authors of a recent post-hurricane economic forecast for the state.

He pegged Lafayette’s strong outlook on the discovery this year of a massive deepwater petroleum pool in the Gulf of Mexico that he expects to fuel brisk activity in the oil-and-gas service sector.

Construction industry survey is launched

Ulster's construction industry is to be monitored through a new quarterly survey charting issues facing the industry.

The Construction Employers' Federation (CEF) has launched the 'State of Trade' survey, which will focus on land prices, planning delays, employment of migrant workers, safety performance and other factors relevant to the industry.

Northern Ireland's construction industry employs more than 70,000 people and accounts for 11% of wealth created within the province.

CEF, which represents 1,000 companies, said rising public sector investment in capital projects and sustained growth in the commercial and housing sectors meant the importance of construction to the local economy is likely to increase.

John Armstrong, CEF managing director, said fitness of the construction industry had a wider bearing on the economy.
