  WO to consider Waste contract

West Orange City Council in a meeting today will discuss a proposed five-year contract renewal with Waste Management for trash collection. The city has an existing contract with Waste Management that expires in December. "The city has used Waste Management for several years," said Theresa Van Meter, city secretary for West Orange. However, if council members decide not to agree on the terms of contract then they will have to "go out for bids," she said.In previous meetings, the council has voted to mow the grass on several West Orange properties that have been vacated. The council will discuss taking action to approve a final mowing for the year. "This will be the second time the properties will be mowed," Van Meter said. The council will also consider a request by Cecil Hudson of 1817 Houston.

'Extreme' project comes to a happy conclusion

LOGAN - The completion of the latest "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project marked a new beginning for the Pauni family of Logan on Sunday afternoon.
Ati Pauni Velasquez, the oldest daughter of Danny and Janet Pauni, remained in Logan last week while her mother and siblings cruised the Virgin Islands. With her husband and 14-month-old daughter by her side, Ati, 19, watched a miracle unfold.
"I have no regrets at all," she said Sunday afternoon just minutes before her family urged the ABC crew to "Move that bus." "It's been crazy, hectic, exciting and unbelievable."
Ali was among thousands of spectators who rehearsed scenes using energetic Pauni relatives as stand-ins. During one of the practice runs, the step on the limousine cracked and had to be removed before the family could be delivered.

'Not giving up' on fixing up Immokalee housing

A quarter of all housing in Immokalee is considered substandard. Sloping floors, broken windows and leaking roofs are common in many rental units.

It won't get fixed overnight.

So say Collier County and state officials who spent this summer weeding out some of the worst units before farmworkers flood the eastern Collier County town for the harvest season. Elected leaders hoped to remove the housing stock while units were empty.

County commissioners set aside $75,000 to hire four more state health inspectors in May. State inspectors shut down nearly 500 beds in about 240 units in Immokalee, including a longtime flophouse, from July through September.

Code enforcement efforts led to 25 structures being demolished, county officials said.

“I think we can make a difference and do it well but it needs to be steady and ongoing," said Nancy Frees, head of the health department in Immokalee who has been working in the town 25 years.

Community transcends stereotypes

Sounds like the beginning of a spooky Halloween story, but it's not. It's just that many of the people who move into the Mayfield Mobile Home Park end up staying for years and years. Recently, a woman in her 90s moved out to live in a retirement community in Tennessee. She'd been living at the mobile home park since 1954.

Economic council draws up new rules for Isolated Islands ...

To prevent improper uses of the special fund for construction in Taiwan's outlying islands, the Council for Economic Planning and Development released Oct. 12 a set of rules by which central government subsidies for the islands would be used more effectively to sustain their unique ecological and cultural characteristics.

The principles imposed clear restrictions on use of the Isolated Islands Construction Fund for general public infrastructure, which should, instead, make use of local governments' budget allocations for public affairs. Furthermore, continued construction on already over-developed islands would be halted and strategies for environmental protection that are appropriate to local conditions would be provided.

Including the Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu island groups and Green Island, Orchid Island and Siaoliouchiou Island, these "isolated islands" are the more populous of Taiwan's many outlying islands.

More oversight for justice center

Alegacy building designed by a signature architect - that's what Denver was promised, with great fanfare, when the process for selecting the architectural firms for the new justice center was announced. Ten noted architects were invited to present their work at public meetings late last year, and more than 2,000 people attended the presentations. A jury of 15 stakeholders considered the proposals and announced their choices in December, again to broad acclaim.

Now the signature architect for the courthouse, Stephen Holl Associates of New York, is gone, and without any public process whatever, his place is being taken by his local partner, klipp Design.

No, that's not good enough. It's not what Denver was promised.

Our first impulse is to say, "start over." But Denver Justice Center policy director James Mejia says it's too late to do that now.
