Web log takes you past construction cones

In June, I started writing Knape's Corner, a Web log at The Press' online site, mlive.com/grpress. It's a place for tidbits and sometimes random thoughts that do not make it into the paper you're holding.

Most of the time the blog is about the Grand Rapids development scene. Sometimes it's not. Occasionally, so I've been told, it's been useful, amusing and interesting.

At times, my wife tells me, it misses the mark.

But always it's an additional take on local happenings you won't see anywhere in these pages, with links, old photos and other items I dig out and post.

Today's column is a digest of entries from this past week. Think of it like a visit to the grocery store when they have a bunch of free samples. Some might be good.

Expert says oil boon imminent

LAFAYETTE — High oil prices and the recent discovery of an untapped petroleum reserve in the Gulf of Mexico will be a boon for Lafayette, a noted economist told business leaders Thursday.

The annual job growth rate in the Lafayette metropolitan area for 2007 and 2008 is forecast at 2.5 percent, economist Loren Scott told a luncheon crowd at the Independent Weekly’s IndExpo business conference.

"That would make you the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the state," he said.

Scott, a professor emeritus of economics at LSU and former department chairman at the university in Baton Rouge, is one of the authors of a recent post-hurricane economic forecast for the state.

He pegged Lafayette’s strong outlook on the discovery this year of a massive deepwater petroleum pool in the Gulf of Mexico that he expects to fuel brisk activity in the oil-and-gas service sector.

He had gunshot wounds, police said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Summers said the preliminary investigation indicated the dead man and Leonard Steven Waller, 54, of 324 Trace Lane, had been drinking and began to argue after Mr.
