The Wake County commissioner, now running for a second term, has become well-known on the seven-member board for his vocal dissents on tax increases and school funding. His opponent, Lindy Brown, hopes voters will say no to Jeffreys. In December, she quit her job as a social worker for Wake County to run against him full time. She says that she is a middle-of-the-road alternative to the board's most conservative member. The Nov. 7 ballot will give the two a big yes-or-no question of their own.Voters will be asked to approve $970 million in bonds to build 17 schools, renovate 13 older schools, make repairs and buy land for future construction. But the bonds come with a 4.7-cent property tax increase, about $70 a year on a $150,000 home.Jeffreys is against them.He says the school board could delay the building program for several years if it put every elementary, middle and high school in the county on a year-round calendar immediately."If they go K-12 year round, they will have enough seats for the kids," he said.Brown supports the bonds. She says the money is needed to build schools to handle the thousands of students arriving each year and buy land now for future schools.

Police say they were acting on a tip when they served a search warrant at 1624 Palm Street. They found the remains in the back yard. Investigators say the remains were that of a non-viable fetus, which means the baby was never carried to term and could be the result of a miscarriage. Residents at the Palm Grove mobile home park say they noticed dozens of Metro police officers and crime scene investigators surrounding the mobile home at around 6 a.m. Friday morning. Police say they were acting on a tip from a citizen alerting them something could be wrong in the backyard of that mobile home. Police then got a search warrant, started digging up the backyard and found the remains of a non-viable fetus. Eyewitness News was told the mother of that fetus was not on property when police arrived or when they found the remains, but investigators say the mother probably will not be facing any charges in connection with this incident.

The challenge that faces anyone who wants to display collections of little objects is that unless the pieces are artfully arranged, they can make a room feel cluttered. Before you part with a prized collection because you think it doesn't work in your close quarters, consider these possibilities. Collections will allow you to keep your treasures on display while at the same time saving valuable storage space where you might have been tempted to stash them. Put tiny items, such as matchbox covers, shells or coins of modest value, into jars and display them on narrow photo shelves of 3 to 4 inches in depth. .
